The Well 52: Laura Brown

Meet Laura Brown, Kroger Dietitian
Laura Brown
Tell us a little bit about yourself...
As Director of Nutrition, I lead Kroger’s Food as Medicine team, touching all things where food and health intersect. My team builds the Food as Medicine products and services for customers and patients, including OptUP® (Kroger’s nutrition rating system) and our telenutrition service. I also lead research efforts supporting the value of Food as Medicine and contribute to various policy efforts.

What is the most important thing you do for your wellness?
I am driven by a passion to transform the way food is viewed, aiming to position Food as Medicine within a holistic approach.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to others?
Avoid demonizing foods, and rather, focusing on adding more nutritious foods to your plate as often as possible. An easy way to do this is to aim for a serving of fruits or vegetables at all meals. Add sliced fruit to your cereal or diced vegetables to your scrambled eggs, enjoy a piece of fruit at lunch time or load your sandwich up with sliced vegetables like tomatoes and onions, and aim to make half of your plate vegetables at dinner time whenever possible!

What is one quote/ mantra you live by?
All foods can fit in a balanced diet.

Brag on yourself- what is something you are REALLY proud of?
My husband and I created 2 beautiful little girls who are the center of my world. My role at Kroger is very demanding, and I am very proud of the work I get to do. However, my work at home is what I am really proud of.
I am always excited to chat about our Nutrition Rating System, OptUP® - which helps to simplify the nutrition label and help customers to identify nourishing foods. I also love to brag on Kroger's commitment to be leaders in the Food as Medicine field and advocate for better access to nourishing foods and nutrition education. A fun fact is that Kroger has 12 patient facing RDs that provide nutrition counseling nationwide!
